Join Richard Goodman, author of French Dirt: The Story of a Garden in the South of France, at beautiful Salt Water Farm in coastal Maine for three days of inspiration, July 29-31. Accompanying our writing practice each day will be a French-inspired multi-course lunch, made by our host and chef, Annemarie Ahearn.

You have a story you want to tell. A memoir you’ve always wanted to write. That can be intimidating.  Where to begin?  What to put in?  What to leave out? These questions can be daunting and overwhelming. You might stop before you even start.

This three-day workshop will help you to get the ball rolling. Or, if you’re stuck, it will provide you with the means to continue.

Each day will begin with a two-hour morning session where we read and discuss the work, followed by a French inspired family-style lunch under the grape arbor and a short walk to ocean’s edge. In the afternoons, we will revisit our memoir writing and assign an exercise for the following day in a one-hour session.

You’ll write every day and be asked to submit writing samples for feedback. You’re not required to read your writing aloud in the workshop, but you’re encouraged to. Hearing your words spoken out loud is a great teacher. Encouragement, in many forms, will be the word of each day. The goal is for you to be inspired.

This workshop will use examples from both nonfiction and fiction to illustrate techniques—character development, dialogue, sentence structure, setting the scene, word choice, and the use of time. Writing exercises will help us into the work.

Join us in Maine in July for the inspiration you’ve been looking for—to begin or continue that book you’ve always wanted to write.
